All-terrain tires are known for many things. But what they don’t usually deliver is comfort and low road noise. But the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W begs to be different. It is an all-terrain tire that delivers all-weather rugged capabilities with no penalties in refinement.
In fact, I’ll say it to you straight. If your ride deserves a set of proper all-terrain tires, check out the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. It is in the middle of the price range but is more affordable than similar all-terrain tires from more popular brands.
In this Falken Wildpeak A/T3W review, you’ll find out how a rugged tire can perform admirably over smooth roads without sacrificing extreme all-terrain traction. I like to think of this product as a hybrid tire. There’s no mistaking the rugged looks and chunky tread blocks. But what boggles the mind is how these tires were able to deliver surprising amounts of comfort and refinement in the highway.
Falken Willdpeak A/T3W: Performance Tread
Falken utilized all the tricks in the book to create the Wildpeak A/T3W. In order to improve durability, Falken utilized an outer apex sidewall that acts a secondary bead in the inner casing of the tire. It acts as a heat shield while offering better sidewall protection against cuts, abrasions, and punctures.
The Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is also equipped with a unique heat diffuser in the lower sidewall. Since this tire is a hybrid between an all-terrain and highway-terrain tire, it should have the capability to effectively dissipate heat on those long and high-speed drives. Minimizing heat is important. Controlling the temperature of the tire under demanding conditions is key to protecting the internal components of the rubber.
The aggressive upper sidewall is designed to improve the rugged styling and stance of your truck or SUV. It even has offset shoulder blocks that provide better protection against sharp rocks while improving grip in off-camber terrain. The Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is constructed using an advanced silica tread compound to improve higher levels on grip on virtually all types of road surfaces, even over icy or snowy roads.
It is also equipped with one of the deepest treads in the all-terrain category. Together with the rigid tread blocks and 3D Canyon sipes that interlocks the tire shoulders, the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is sure to offer the grip and traction you need to conquer any type of terrain.
Tire Review in Different Conditions
Let’s see how the tires will perform under various driving conditions.
It really doesn’t matter if you’re travelling over tarmac, loose gravel, dry mud, or sand. The Falken Wildpeak A/T3W offers excellent grip on dry roads. It gives the vehicle a feeling that it can conquer rougher or harsher terrain. On smooth roads the tires were a revelation in the dry. Even as I travelled at higher than average speeds, the tires never skipped a beat. I am surprised how the tires were able to offer more grip over a set of all-season rubber, but this is the Falken difference.
Again, I am surprised at the wet weather capabilities of the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. The large and aggressive tread blocks are sure to offer grip over thick mud or treacherous river crossings, but the surprising part is how the tires felt on a wet patch of smooth highway. The progress is smooth and steady with no hint of hydroplaning. The brakes also felt strong as the tires obliged to my hard braking maneuvers. Is it possible the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W is better in the wet than on dry? I find this hard to believe. But based on my test drives and reviews, it seems Falken has achieved the unimaginable.
Here’s another good things about the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W: it is officially recognized by the Rubber Manufacturer’s Association and is blessed with the 3PMSF symbol. What this means is superior performance in extreme snow. That fact alone is enough to discern how the tires behaved on snowy and icy roads. Driving over snow felt normal with no loss of traction. The braking felt strong and consistent. Deeper snow was a bit of challenge, but the tires handled everything with unmistakable poise. Driving over sleet or thick ice is also confidence-inspiring as long as you keep the speeds down. Looking to equip your SUV with all-terrain tires for winter driving? Look no further.
The comfort levels of the tire will depend on the NVH characteristics of your vehicle. I tried these tires on a raised Suzuki Vitara and the ride is not as horrible as expected, and that’s when traversing over rough patches of off-road trails. On the highway the tires were also marginally comfortable, if not a bit too firm to my liking. But when I tested the tires on a Ford F-150, the comfort levels were significantly raised to a higher level. Dare I say this is one of the most refined all-terrain tires in the market? It definitely comes close.
All-terrain tires are in their element over rough roads. The same holds true for the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. I have no problems on how the tires behaved on smooth roads, but I felt more confident as I was driving over loose gravel peppered with dry sand on dirt roads. The tires also felt assuring when driving over snow. But for extreme off-roading over knee-deep mud, you’ll need a more rugged set of mud tires.
Handling and Noise
I wouldn’t expect sharper handling or aggressive cornering from a set of all-terrain tires. But the noise levels are simply divine. All-terrain and mud tires are known for being buzzy on the highway, and it’s a trade-off you should accept. But with the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W, all my expectations were shattered. The tires were not droning or were as noisy as I was expecting as I sped on a smooth highway, and that’s a good thing to have in a set of all-terrain rubber. You will only hear road noise as you approach the speed limit. But again, the noise levels will also depend on the NVH tuning in your ride.

The Bottom Line
Praises are in store for the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. If you need an all-terrain tire with all-weather capabilities and a smooth ride, the Wildpeak A/T3W is up to task. Falken also managed to give the tire a friendly price, which makes it a solid choice for budget-oriented buyers as well.
